Understanding Futures Trading Sessions
By Ethan Warmuskerken · 7 min read
Learn how Asia, London, and New York futures trading sessions affect liquidity, volatility, market rhythm, and the best time to trade each contract.
Futures markets operate nearly 24 hours a day, but trading activity varies throughout different global sessions. Understanding when these sessions occur can help you identify periods of higher or lower liquidity.
The Three Major Sessions
Hours: 6:00 PM - 3:00 AM Eastern Time
The Asian session is generally the quietest for U.S. index futures (ES, NQ, YM). Tokyo financial markets are active during this time, but volume in U.S. equity index futures tends to be lower.
Hours: 3:00 AM - 12:00 PM Eastern Time
The London session sees increased activity as European markets open. Volume begins to pick up in U.S. index futures, particularly after 8:00 AM ET when pre-market activity intensifies ahead of the New York open.
Hours: 9:30 AM - 4:00 PM Eastern Time (Regular Trading Hours)
The New York session is when the U.S. stock market is open. This is typically the highest volume and most liquid period for U.S. index futures like ES, NQ, and YM. The opening 30 minutes (9:30-10:00 AM ET) and closing hour (3:00-4:00 PM ET) often see the most activity.
Session Overlaps
London-New York Overlap (8:00 AM - 12:00 PM ET)
The overlap between London and New York sessions typically shows increased volume and volatility. Both European and U.S. traders are active during this window.
Peak Liquidity Hours
For U.S. index futures (ES, NQ, YM), peak liquidity generally occurs:
- 9:30 AM - 10:30 AM ET: Market open, highest volume
- 10:00 AM - 11:30 AM ET: Active trading continues
- 2:00 PM - 4:00 PM ET: Afternoon activity picks up into the close
- 3:00 PM - 4:00 PM ET: Closing hour, high volume
Lower Liquidity Periods
Volume tends to be lower during:
- 6:00 PM - 3:00 AM ET: Asian session hours
- 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM ET: Lunch hour slowdown
Session Times Quick Reference
Note: All times listed are in Eastern Time (ET). CME futures markets operate on Central Time (CT), which is one hour behind Eastern Time. Remember to account for Daylight Saving Time changes.
